🌟 Honoring Resilience: Ramona Rousseau-Reid Named VOAD’s Volunteer of the Year!
A Tribute to Community, Compassion, and the Power of Partnership in Eastwick’s Recovery
Dear Eastwick Friend,
This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the extraordinary work of VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) — a national coalition dedicated to rebuilding lives and communities after disaster strikes. In Eastwick, VOAD’s partnership with local organizations has not only restored homes but also renewed hope.
And at the heart of this story stands our very own Ramona Rousseau-Reid, whose tireless dedication has earned her the prestigious title of VOAD’s 2025 Volunteer of the Year. Let’s explore how VOAD’s mission and Ramona’s leadership are transforming our community, one step at a time.
What Is VOAD and Why Does It Matter?
The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is a coalition of over 70 national organizations — including faith-based groups, community-based organizations, and other non-profits — all working together to enhance disaster response and recovery efforts.
VOAD’s mission is guided by four core principles:
Cooperation
Communication
Coordination
Collaboration
“By uniting diverse organizations under a shared commitment to these principles, VOAD ensures that aid is delivered efficiently, resources are utilized effectively, and duplication of services is minimized.”
Since its founding in 1970, VOAD has provided a vital forum to foster these values, bringing together volunteers, organizations, and communities to help those affected by disasters.
🤝 VOAD and Eastwick: A Partnership in Resilience
In the wake of disasters like Tropical Storm Isaias, VOAD has been instrumental in Eastwick’s recovery journey.
Key Highlights of VOAD’s Impact in Eastwick:
Formed the Eastwick Unmet Needs Roundtable:
A grassroots coalition that unites local organizations and city agencies to address specific recovery needs.Coordinated critical home repairs and resource distribution to help residents rebuild.
Emphasized diversity, equity, and inclusion in disaster response efforts — ensuring that aid is culturally sensitive and meets the unique needs of every neighbor.
VOAD didn’t just see Eastwick as a flood zone — they saw families, elders, children, and a community fighting to stay whole.
This approach has empowered Eastwick residents to play an active role in shaping a more resilient and sustainable future.
